Often hail damage is detectable but in some cases it is very difficult to determine the extent of the hail damage.

An on-site inspection by a professional who is trained in identifying hail occurrence and any resulting damages is the best option. But here are some of the tips that will help you determine whether your roof may have sustained hail damage or not.

NOTE: Remember to take full precautions when going on your roof. Slips and Falls are a common occurrence and often have devastating results. If there was ever a job to let the pro’s do…inspecting your roof is one of them.
At Total Exteriors we work together with your insurance claims adjuster to make the claims process as stress-free as possible for you.

Shingles on your roof are designed to block UV rays from the sun with protecting granules. If they are broken this will often void your manufacturer’s warranty. Small-sized hailstones can cause significant damage and increases the chance of roof deterioration.

Asphalt shingles are made of asphalt that's strengthened with either an organic or some other covering material.  These are coated with little granules that are designed to minimize the roof from the sun’s harmful rays.

Once hail damages a shingle, there's a dark spot on the affected shingle wherever the granules are stripped as a result of the impact. In some instances, holes appear after a hail storm.

If you notice shingles are damaged after a hail storm your roof requires immediate attention from a professional roofing contractor.

Another way to check whether your roof has holes as a result of potential hail damage is to go into your attic during daytime and close the door or hatch. With the absence of light, the attic will be darker, which makes it easier to notice any holes in your asphalt shingles. Try to look between rafters/trusses and look for daylight shining through as the small ray will indicate that there is damage in the roof. This method is often not effective as other layer(s) of substrate material may be under your roof shingles and thus block daylight shining through.
